VO2max values dropping

Fri 10. Jan 2020, 10:50

I have recently started to use runalyze, and I have a question regarding the calculation of VO2max.
It seems like the calculated VO2max values for my runs imported from before I signed up to runalyze gives a higher value than the ones for my runs after I signed up.

I signed up on the 2. of December, so on the shape calculation graph the VO2max curve is dropping heavily from mid December.

Some examples are two quite similar runs with the same average heart rate of 80% HRmax

On the 18. November I ran 10.01 km in 50:24, giving a standard calculation of 39.69, and a heart rate corrected result of 59.03
On the 11. December I ran 12.17 km in 1:00:05, giving a standard calculation of 41.20, and a heart rate corrected result of 53.28

both runs then do the same correction based on my correction factor of 0.85.
What I don't understand is why the 11. December run gives a lower heart rate corrected VO2max value than my 18. November run, since the standard calculation is higher, and both have the same 80% HRmax.

8. November - Your run does not have elevation data
11. December - Your run has elevation data
"adapt for elevation" is activated for your VO2max estimation. So it makes a difference.

Yes, but the heart rate corrected values seems to be applied before the elevation adaption is beeing made.

And since the 11. December run has elevation while the 18. November run was on a threadmill I would think that the 11. December run should give the highest VO2max value, but that is not the case.

Did you enter your maximal heart rate on 2nd December before or after importing all the activities? I guess you did so afterwards. By default, and that applies to all activities before 02.12., a maximal heart rate of 200 is used.

Tools --> More --> Database cleanup --> Loop through all activities and recalculate VO2max

This is not done by default as in general, a new maximal heart rate will not cause such large differences - only if it's entered the first time and this should be done before importing all activities. But I'll put this on our list.

Thank you very much. That seems to do the trick. I recalculated the VO2max and the TRIMP values, and the graphs now looks more like I expected them to do :)
